The Catahoula Leopard dog is named after the Catahoula Parish in the state of Louisiana, USA. In 1979, the breed became the state dog of Louisiana. The breed has a long history in Louisiana and the surrounding states. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the breed’s history and origin with various theories having been put forward over the years. I personally believe the breed descends from French dogs, possibly early Beauceron types and Siberian Bloodhounds/Cuban Bloodhounds (large running mastiff types) taken to America by early settlers where they were crossed with local Native American dogs. These crosses were the foundation for the Catahoula. The breed has been widely used to hunt large game, herd livestock and also as a general farm dog. MORE INFO COMING SOON!
