The Boerboel began from the many mastiff type dogs taken to South Africa by European settlers over the last few centuries. The dogs were bred to be multi functional farm dogs and were also expected to protect the home steads from any trespassers or intruding wild animals. In the 1920’s-1930’s, a large number of Bullmastiff’s were imported to South Africa from England to help protect the diamond and gold mines from thief’s. These Bullmastiffs were bred with local farm dogs and the resulting offspring was the foundation of the modern day Boerboel. In the 1980’s, further crosses were made by fanciers and breeders with other Mastiff breeds to create the registered Boerboel of today. MORE INFO COMING SOON!!
