The Lagotto Romagnolo comes from the Romagna region in the North of Italy where they have been used for centuries, as a multi purpose field and water dog in and around marshes. Lagotto Romagnolo literally means the Romagna lagoon dog. The Lagotto is considered to be one of the oldest water dog breeds in Europe and many claim he is the ancestor of the Spanish Water Dog, Portuguese Water Dog and the French Poodle. The breed today is mainly used as a truffle hunter as it excels at finding this very rare subterranean fungus and because many of the marshes have now been drained.
